Make your bedroom no cat zone. You're not going to be happy if you can't sleep because of sniffles, stuffiness and itching eyes. cats can have rest of house but bedroom should be your sanctuary.
Vacuum - LOT! Keeping on top of cat hair will go long way toward keeping allergy symptoms at bay. One of easiest ways to keep your floors clean is to invest in robot vacuum cleaner like Roomba. You can start it when you leave for work every day and it will wander house vacuuming up all dust and cat hair. If you live in large or multi-level house you may need to get more than one. You will need to vacuum furniture at least weekly but if you're sacrificing for your significant other's cat, ask him or her to vacuum furniture for you.
Give your cat weekly damp bath with product to remove antigens that cause allergies. To do this you dampen cloth with allergy product such as Allerpet/C and wipe cat's fur all over. Fluff dry him with bath towel and he'll be good for week. Make drying cuddle session with cat and he'll love it.
Wash your hands after petting cat. Be very careful to avoid rubbing your eyes after petting cat. If you have problems with itching eyes, your optometrist can prescribe eye drops that will relieve itching instantly.
